According to a report on the British "Daily Mail" website on January 21st, researchers at Stanford University in the United States are currently working with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop a new small-scale detector. The “Robin Hog Robot” is used to conduct related detections of Phobos to provide support for future Mars missions.
It is understood that the "hedgehog robot" width of about 0.5 meters full of spikes, the future will be similar in size and a coffee table "Phnom Penh spacecraft" carry to Phobos. After arriving at the destination, the Phobos spacecraft will continue to fly around Phobos. It will spend the first few months investigating the Phobos terrain and then choose the right time to release the "Robin Hood Robot."
The spacecraft will release 5 to 6 "hedgehog robots" in sequence to conduct a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of Phobos. Each time a spacecraft is released, the spacecraft will also "conduct" the specific landing position and direction of travel of the "Robinia pseudoacacia."
Unlike ordinary Mars probes, the “Robin Hopper Robot” has no wheels externally. It relies on three internal rotatable Frisbees. Each Frisbee points in a different direction. The energy of the Frisbee is solar energy installed on the casing. Battery board provided. With these frisbees, the “Robinia pseudoacacia” can not only jump and roll on the surface of Phobos in a low-gravity environment, but also can accurately reach the target location to collect information on Phobos such as soil and rock, and send it back to Earth.
It is reported that Phobos is one of the two moons of Mars. At present, astronomers generally believe that Phobos can be used as a transit point for human exploration of Mars. In addition, if Phobos is a fragment of Mars, then humans can learn about the geology of Mars through its research. This will undoubtedly save a lot of exploration and research costs.
